Oculus analysis
The film begins with the production and distribution companies some of which being Intrepid pictures and Blumhouse Productions. Immediately as the film begins, there is a close up of half of a person's face showing their visible cheek splattered in blood, as the audience, we are now able to assume that something bad has already happened or still happening. There is then a mid shot from the person's perspective walking around holding a gun. This then makes the audience feel nervous for the character, although we haven't even been introduced to the either character yet. We are then able to recognise the person hiding behind the door is a young girl, she also has a young boy with her. The escape from the door and head to the front of the house. The camera moves towards the boys face using a close up, this then gives the audience a chance to acknowledge the boys facial expressions which are at this point scared. The shot then switches to what he is looking at. A long shot shows a ghostly looking woman stood in front of them. This makes the audience assume that she has something to do with what they're afraid of. The children then press themselves against the door, looking terrified. A man walks towards them and the opening sequence ends with a close up of a gun being held to the girls head. As the audience, we now feel sorry and scared for the girl and want to keep watching the film to see why this has been happening. This is an effective opening title sequence as it leaves the audience feeling empathy and connections with the characters already, even though we have only just met them. It has a suspense start and makes the audience feel willing to watch the remainder of the film to find out more.
Saw vi analysis
The opening scene of Saw VI features its production and distribution companies which are Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures. The content of the film then begins by showing a woman wearing a trap around her head. This is shown using a close up 360 shot around her, therefore showing disorientation and making the audience wonder why she is in there. There is then a long shot, neutral view showing her surroundings which at this point is a caged off area in a suspected warehouse. This automatically makes the audience feel as though something is not right as the surroundings are not apparent to the introduced character. The shot switches to a close up of the weapons on the table, therefore making the audience assume that something has to happen with those weapons shown. The first shot is then recreated but changed to showing a man. The man seems to be in the same situation as the woman, and this means that the audience will feel empathy to both characters. The camera then moves to show a close up of the TV which features a puppet talking to them, telling them what they have to do to escape the trap. The rest of the opening sequence shows them completely this task, which makes the audience feel empathy towards the two characters and also makes them want to continue watching to find out what will happen next.
Nightmare on elm street analysis
At the beginning of the scene, we are partially introduced to a character. We are only shown his hands and mid section, we also hear his voice as he laughs and hums. This part of the scene only uses close ups to show him making a glove with knives in. We are then introduced to a woman, who seems to be running away from the man. We can assume this because she runs into the shot, which is also a close up and looks around her. Her facial expressions show that she is scared. There is then an extreme long shot, showing her stood at the end of a long, wide alleyway. This makes the audience feel empathy towards her as we are able to see that she is alone. There are then many over the shoulder shots of her running and looking back as she knows that someone is following her. This makes the audience feel tense and scared for her as we can assume that something will happen to her.
The conjuring analysis
The first second of the film starts off with a close up shot on the dolls left eye. This scene is very keen for the audience because it starts to make the audience think at first what is the movie going to be a bout? Then they start think if the whole story is going to be based on this doll so they’re going to build up a bit of a scare with this doll. It makes the audience feel that the doll is bigger than the audience so they’re going to respect it. And the second bit is when the three suspects are sat on the couch being questioned about what is happening in their house. This is being filmed in a midshot in a neutral view which makes the audience feel equal to the people in the film because they are being represented as normal people as us. And my last key shot is a high angle going into a close being focused on a rolling crayon that is rolling away from the doll. This shot leaves a huge impact on the doll because now they are frightened by the doll because they now know it’s alive and it’s haunted. And by being focused on the crayon it builds up tension to the audience when it’s going to transfer to the next shot because they’re terrified if the haunted doll is going to do something. This is effective because it leaves the audience feeling empathy and connections with the characters already, even though we have only just met them. It has a suspense start and makes the audience feel willing to watch the remainder of the film to find out more.
